Conversation

Conversation with the Lord is wanting God to be involved in every aspect of your life. You desire to know what is on His heart and His mind. Inquiring with God brings you into His Presence.

What is Conversation?

It’s easy to hear God when you are in His presence! When you have a conversation with God, you feel close to Him because His answer reveals His nearness to you. There is an encounter with God waiting for you when you ask Him questions!

The more you talk with Him, the more you know what His voice sounds like. God wants to speak to us because His voice changes us! One word from God can change everything! In your daily encounters, ask God questions. You may start your time with the Lord by asking what's on His heart and His mind. You can ask Him questions about the scripture you are meditating on. You can ask Him about decisions you need His wisdom for. When you don’t know how to parent your child, ask Him for His strategy. When you need courage, ask Him to remind you who He says you are. When He speaks to you, write down what He says and continue the conversation with Him! This is how you steward His voice.

“My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.” John 10:27

Connect with God through Movement + Conversation Sermon

What does God’s voice sound like?

He is always speaking. He has the answers you need! God’s voice never contradicts what His word says in the Bible. He may speak to you with a thought, a vision or daydream, a dream, a feeling, or a sense. When you are reading scripture, words may jump out at you. This is the Holy Spirit breathing life into the Word, speaking to you, and inviting you into new revelation. Follow His leading and ask God for more clarity. God’s voice may come in the form of visions or daydreams. Be aware when you see a scene in your mind and ask the Holy Spirit to reveal more. God’s voice may come to you in the form of knowing or sensing. You may feel peace and discernment as He is speaking to you. Ask Him for more clarity! God’s voice may also be a phrase or thought that seems to come to you from nowhere. Become aware of His voice in your daily encounters and how He speaks to you. It is easy to hear God in His presence, so get into His presence and you will hear Him speak!

Grow in intimacy with the Trinity through conversation:

As you grow in connecting with God through conversation, become aware of which person of the Trinity you talk to the most. Grow in your relationship with God by talking to God the Father, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit in your daily personal encounters. You can encounter each member of the Trinity by getting to know how the Bible refers to each person. If you talk to the Holy Spirit the most, ask Him to introduce you to God the Father. Each member of the Trinity desires to commune with you!

Grow in intimacy with the Trinity through Conversation:

  • Jesus | Communication & Companionship

Pursue communication with Jesus. We have a value at Mercy Culture to communicate. We say, “Downshift.” We slow down to communicate clearly today, so we can move forward faster tomorrow. Have a spiritual downshift with Jesus to catch His heart for what you are doing now. When you slow down and ask Him questions, He will communicate with you in the way you best receive from Him! Jesus provides companionship to you.

John 15:15 - “No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you.”

Matthew 28:20 - “and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

Through conversation, we get the opportunity to get to know Jesus better. This is true companionship! In scripture, when God assigned a name to someone, it defined who they were and their identity. You can get to know Jesus more by knowing His different names, the ways He is referenced in scripture, and then using those names in conversation. Call Jesus Savior as you are contending for deliverance. You can call Jesus Rabbi when you are seeking His teaching and wisdom. You can call Jesus The Good Shepherd when you need His guidance and leading. As you get to know Jesus in this way, you’re connecting not only with the fullness of who He is, but joining in the worship of all that He has done and all that He will do!

  • God the Father | Provides, Protects & Declares Identity

The Father provides, protects, and declares identity over us. Unlike our earthly fathers, who are imperfect, God the Father never lets us down. He shows us who He has created us to be. As you connect with God through conversation, be intentional to talk to God the Father and ask Him what He says about you. He will fill every need that a Father does and more. Having conversations with God the Father will bring healing to you! At Mercy Culture, we have a value of Trust. We say, “Lean into Awkward.” We build the trust, character, and relationship of tomorrow by engaging in tough conversations today. You may feel awkward talking to God the Father but lean into the awkward, not out. Don’t let awkwardness keep you from an encounter that will bring healing and freedom to you! Talk with God the Father and watch your trust in Him grow.

John 15:16 - “You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you.”

Ephesians 1:3-4 - “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places, even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him.”

Call God by His names! Explore the different names of God in scripture to add weight and depth to your conversations with Him. When you talk to God about His power and engage in the fear of the Lord, refer to Him as the Great I Am. When you are talking about His protection and guidance, call Him Jehovah-Rohi, meaning “Our Shepherd” (Psalm 23). When you are talking to Him intimately, call Him El Roi, meaning “The God Who Sees” (Genesis 16:13). When you need His provision, call Him Jehovah-Jireh, meaning “The Lord Will Provide” (Genesis 22). There are many ways you can refer to God the Father based on scripture. As you call Him by His different names in conversation, you are stirring up your faith and engaging in the history of all that He is and has been for all eternity! These names are personal and speak to His nature as God the Father.

  • Holy Spirit | Comfort, Teaching, Guiding & Nurturing

The Holy Spirit provides comfort, teaching, guiding, and nurturing. Talk to the Holy Spirit when you need His guidance on what to do. The Holy Spirit promises to bring to remembrance everything Jesus has said! At Mercy Culture, we have a value of Authenticity. We say, “We don't do fake.” We disciple through real relationships. We create an atmosphere for people to be open and honest by leading in vulnerability and transparency. Authenticity is how we are discipled and how we grow. As you talk with the Holy Spirit, come to Him with authenticity. Your authenticity will make a way for you to fully receive His help!

Romans 8:26-27 - “In the same way the Spirit also helps our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we should, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words; and He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.”

John 16:13 - “But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come.”

Get to know the fullness of who the Holy Spirit is by exploring what He is called and the ways He is discussed in scripture. If you only know Him one way, you are missing out on the fullness of His empowerment in your life! You can call Him Spirit of Truth (John 16:13) when you are needing His revelation in a certain area. Call Him Counselor (Isaiah11:2) when you are seeking His wisdom in a greater capacity. Holy Spirit is called The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord (Isaiah 61:1), The Spirit of God (Genesis 1:2), The Spirit of Life (Romans 8:2), The Spirit of Prophecy (Revelation 19:10), The Spirit of Holiness (Romans 1:4), The Spirit of Glory (1 Peter 4:14), The Spirit of Justice (Isaiah 28:6), The Spirit of Fire (Isaiah 4:4), and more. Get these names in you so you know how to engage in conversation with the fullness of who the Holy Spirit really is!
